Middle Ground
Written in 1968, this is the story of Tyl von Pankow, ripped from his Prussian military academy and sent to a labor camp for being half Jewish. Tyl survives, and despite his terror and his cynicism, falls in love with the most unlikely person possible: the commandant of the camp. What happens to them and to the other inhabitants of the camp during the war and the Allied Occupation is a great story.
