We are looking for Pen-pals for Incarcerated MAPs
If you were a sex-offender in prison, your primary window into the outside world would be TV. On TV, if you would see sex-offenders portrayed at all, it would be as the lowest life-form of all – as scum-bags. Its the same identity you would have with the majority of the non-sex offenders with whom you lived. Essentially the same image – but framed in politer terms – would be conveyed to you by treatment providers, if you were required to be in a treatment program.
Resisting the internalization of the identity that is pushed onto them from all sides is the most important thing incarcerated MAPs can do. Pen-pals can provide incarcerated MAPs with one of the few supports that is available for experiencing themselves as ordinary, decent human beings.
The refusal to internalize society’s image of the “pedophile” is the required beginning of the needed revolution with regard to the way MAPs are treated by society. Being a pen-pal to an incarcerated MAP can therefore not only help a member of the most persecuted and disadvantaged group in our society, it can also be a revolutionary act.
If you are interested in exploring the possibility of becoming a pen-pal to an incarcerated MAP, write to me at Jay Edson, Box 575, Lincoln, Maine, or email me at <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.> .
